Algeria donate WC winnings

The Fennec Foxes, who reached the knockout stages of the competition for the first time in their history, did the continent proud, narrowly losing to European giants Germany 2-1 in their Last 16 encounter on Monday. And Africa’s highest-ranked nation have decided to share their success with the impoverished, donating the money granted by FIFA following their successful World Cup campaign to the poor in Gaza. “They need it more than us,” said Algerian striker Islam Slimani, as quoted in theDaily Mail. Algeria’s World Cup prize money is set to be in the region of $9 million (R97 million) which will be donated to the war-torn region. The Algerian squad were given a hero’s welcome in the country’s capital Algiers on Wednesday after returning from their historic Mundial run in Brazil.
